To add more texture to my work i have incorporated stitch into my work. On those that had dots on the icing i have added beads so that it looks like hundreds and thousands. Then for other examples i have just used a bit of stitching to highlight the edge of either the cake or the case.
Following on from making up stories/scenes for my sweets, i have done the same for the cakes. They are based on how cakes are usually displayed, on a pretty cake stand. I have then collaged into it several different types of cakes which have used a variety of media. These could also be used for card designs.
I also wanted to see how my designs would look on fabric, even though i consider myself to be paper based. I was pleased with how they looked, but i dont think it is something i will take further. I like the idea of using my designs within a branding situation and one of the things i thought about was making them 3D, so working with fabric enabled me to do this. I cut out the shapes of the cakes and added a patterned background before stitching it together with wadding in between. This made the cakes sqidgy and felt more like a toy, but because they are quite small i think that they could be used for key rings or something similar. Branding is something i would definitely like to take forward, either in this project if there is time or my final project.
To add more pattern to my designs i have created some of my own and then added them to the cases of some of my cakes. I originally tried this by inter cutting, but as i want it to be aimed at gift wrap this wouldn't be practical. So i then used to Photoshop to combine the two elements. I have tried to use patterns that you would find on actual cake cases. I think that the hearts work the best. I will now use these images within my collages.
i felt that i needed to broaden up my imagery so i went back to one of my earlier ideas of using cakes, which i think goes well with the sweets. I began bu drawing lots of different types of cakes. I have scanned these a=in and left them black and white, and i have also added colour to some of them using water colour. I have tried to draw a variety of cakes so that different characters can be added to them. I think that the cakes with different icings are better as they have more character to them.
As i want my final pieces to be paper based, mainly cards and giftwrap, i have thought about ways in which i can layer up my images so that they could be used for wrap. I will use the scenes more for the cards as there isn't enough going on on them to be used for wrap. These are some examples of how i could use my sweets for wrap. The first image is how i could arrange my sweets, i think that it is too plain with a white background, it either needs more sweets closer together or it needs a plain colour. I have also tried adding a plain colour as the background, i think that this makes the sweets stand out a lot better. This isnt the colour i will use but it gives an indication of how my final images may turn out. I will have to consider the background colour very carefully so that it doesn't overpower the images.
To help give my sweets more of a character, i would like them to be set in a scene. This could also be used for my card ideas, so there is more detail on them. These are some of my examples of scene that i could put my sweets in. I have drawn them on Illustrator and then added my sweets into them. If i do take these ideas further i will have to think about backgrounds as at the moment they are all just white. I have tried to think of scenes which fit with sweets like Hansel and Gretel's house and a bubblegum dispenser. I think that these fit with my idea of making mini collages which have several aspects to them. I think that my real sweets are the best but with the drawings it adds another dimension to it.
These are some of the sweets that i have drawn by hand. I have left some black and white and others i have added a slight bit of colour using watercolours. I have stuck to using realistic colours so that it fits with the photos of the sweets. By doing this i will have more imagery to work with and i can use a mixture of photography, drawing and computer work so that it is more of a collage.
